Corporate Social Responsibility Panel

Economies of emerging markets such as those in Asia are growing dramatically; companies and governments continue to address the opportunities and challenges of sustainability in business and society. Dealing with the dynamics and complexity of sustainability and social responsibility, businesses need to innovate and change their current mindset in order to succeed. The CSR panel will cover issues surrounding sustainable innovation, social innovation, and CSR-driven innovation in a rapidly growing Asia.
Speaker: Steven W. Percy
Former Chairman & CEO, BP America

Steven Percy chairs the Board of Wavefront Technology Solutions, a service provider to the the oil and gas and environmental remediation industries. He is also a member of the Board of Omnova Solutions headquartered in Akron. Since retiring from BP he has visited as a Professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. Previously, he served on President Clinton’s Council on Sustainable Development as Co-Chair of its Climate Change Task Force. Mr. Percy has contributed to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. His formal education includes a BSME, MBA, and a JD. He is an alumnus of the Ross School of Business where he received his MBA.
Speaker: Jim Frey
CEO and Co-founder, Resource Recycling Systems (RRS)

Jim Frey has thirty years of expertise in environmental program development both in public service and private enterprise. Mr. Frey is often involved in project negotiations that bring together key stakeholders representing both public and private sector interests as they build long-term partnerships that create a foundation for program growth many years into the future. He chairs the State of Michigan Waste Reduction Advisory Committee, Michigan Solar Energy Association and the Ann Arbor Energy Commission. Jim is also a member of the Erb Advisory Board of the Erb Institute for Global Corporate Sustainability at the University of Michigan. Mr. Frey holds an MBA with High Distinction from the University of Michigan.
Speaker: David J. Tulauskas
Director of Sustainability, General Motors Company

David Tulauskas is responsible for all aspects of sustainability reporting and managing the “Sustainability Council” of subject matter experts and functional leaders. Since joining GM in 1991 as staff engineer on the Environmental Activities Staff in Detroit, Mr. Tulauskas has worked in a wide range of functions from manufacturing to product development to government relations and public policy. He was previously based in Shanghai, where he developed GM's Alternative Fuel Strategy for Asia. He also oversaw GM's public policy activities throughout Asia, and helped build a unified regional and global strategies & business priorities on key issues impacting energy, the environment, trade, and safety. Mr. Tulauskas holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan, a Master of Science degree in civil/environmental engineering from Wayne State University and an International Executive MBA from Rutgers University. He and his wife are blessed with three children.
Moderator: Professor Aneel Karnani
Professor of Strategy, Stephen M. Ross School of Business

Professor Karnani’s interests are focused on three topics: strategies for growth, global competition, and the role of business in society. His recent research is on poverty reduction and the appropriate roles for the private sector, the state and civil society. He is interested in how society can strike the appropriate balance between private profits and public welfare in tackling major societal problems. He is the author of the book Fighting Poverty Together published by Macmillan in 2011. In addition to these university activities, Dr. Karnani is actively involved in executive development programs both in companies and throughout the University of Michigan. He consults with firms on strategic planning processes, and strategy analysis and formulation.
